Out With the Old: What Flooring Removal Really Involves

Before a new floor goes down, the old one has to come up. Removal is the noisiest and dustiest part of the job, and it's also where surprises like uneven slabs or old adhesive show up. Knowing what to expect makes the whole project less stressful.

Carpet removal

Carpet, pad, and tack strip usually come out quickly. We pull every staple and strip so nothing telegraphs through the new floor, then sweep the slab clean.

Tile removal

Old ceramic tile is the most demanding removal. It's broken up, the mortar beneath it is ground down, and the debris is hauled away. It's loud work, but it's essential: new floors need a flat, clean base.

Glued vinyl and adhesives

Glue-down vinyl and old carpet glue can leave residue that has to be scraped or ground before a new floor will sit flat. We handle this during floor demolition and prep.

How to prepare

  • Remove small furniture, decor, and anything fragile.
  • Plan for pets and kids to be away from the work area.
  • Let us know about any known plumbing or slab issues.

Removal and prep are included in the written quote you get at your estimate, with no surprise add-ons later. Read more about how our installs work, or see why slab condition matters.
