Luxury Vinyl vs. Laminate: Which Is Better for Las Vegas Homes?

Luxury vinyl plank and laminate are the two most popular choices we install across the valley. Both look like wood, both cost less than real hardwood, and both go down quickly. But they behave differently in a desert home, and picking the right one for each room saves you headaches later.

Water and pool splash-out

If a room sees water, choose luxury vinyl plank. Its core doesn't swell, so wet swimsuits, a leaking dishwasher, or mopping won't hurt it. Today's laminate is far more water-resistant than it used to be, but standing water at the seams is still its weak spot.

Scratches, pets, and desert grit

Fine dust works like sandpaper under shoes. Laminate's hard wear layer resists scratches very well, which makes it a favorite for homes with big dogs. Better-grade vinyl with a thick wear layer holds up too. Either way, a doormat at every exterior door is the cheapest floor protection you can buy.

Comfort and sound

Laminate feels firmer and sounds more like wood. Vinyl is softer and quieter, especially with an attached pad. In two-story homes, we often suggest vinyl upstairs to cut footstep noise.

Our honest recommendation

  • Kitchens, baths, laundry, and rooms near the pool: luxury vinyl.
  • Bedrooms, offices, and living rooms: laminate or vinyl, whichever look you love.
  • Want one floor throughout? Waterproof vinyl is the safest single choice.
