If you want the warm look of wood but you're worried about heat, water, and dust, you'll end up comparing two options: wood-look porcelain tile and luxury vinyl plank. Both are excellent choices in the desert, but they feel very different to live on.
How they feel day to day
Porcelain tile stays cool, which many Las Vegas homeowners love in summer, but it's hard on feet and anything you drop on it breaks. Luxury vinyl plank has a little give, absorbs sound, and feels warmer in winter.
Durability
Tile is nearly impossible to scratch and doesn't fade in sun. Quality vinyl with a thick wear layer resists everyday scratches well and can have individual planks replaced if needed. Tile grout lines need occasional sealing, especially with hard water; vinyl has none.
Installation
Vinyl floats over the slab and most homes are done in a few days. Tile needs a flat, solid base, mortar, cure time, and grout, so it takes longer. We explain the timeline for each in our installation guide.
Our take
- Choose tile if you want the longest-lasting floor and like a cool, solid feel.
- Choose luxury vinyl if comfort, quiet, and a faster install matter more.
- Many homes mix both: tile in baths and entries, vinyl in living areas.
